Position Summary
The Senior Researcher in our Washington DC office is part of a global Knowledge team and provides substantive research and insight for client work and business development efforts. Specialized knowledge and research expertise to support the Washington office practices, including in the areas of Corporate, Intellectual Property, Litigation, M&A. The Senior Researcher provides strategic research related to markets, industries, and competitors. Coordinates and conducts attorney training on research tools and methodology, as well as participating in broader department strategic initiatives. As part of a centralized global research team, the Senior Researcher in Washington collaborates with colleagues to provide research across White & Case offices. The Senior Researcher leads project teams, train and mentor colleagues, and triage requests as needed.

Duties and Accountabilities1

 

  • Perform substantive print and online research to support the [local and global] practices. 
  • Educate attorneys on appropriate and specialized research resources and methodology. 
  • Ensure that library services are effectively promoted to attorneys and legal staff.
  • Conduct “just in time” training for legal staff.
  • Use current awareness tools to create newsletters and alerts for ongoing monitoring of clients, industries and events.
  • Participate in evaluating and developing the research collection and pilot new services.
  • Proactively and independently assess research requests and ensure that the research meets stated and anticipated needs.
  • Ensures continuing professional development and keeps abreast of the legal industry.
  • Provides templated research reports, product comparisons and analysis.
  • Provides cross-training and mentoring to colleagues in other offices.
  • Executes complex research request on our internal knowledge systems.
  • Triages ready reference requests to Manila while focusing on more complex, high-level queries
  • Tracks and record billable and non-billable time spent providing research services according to the Firm’s library billing policy. Close time entries on a daily basis.
  • Handles special projects as requested by supervisors. 
 

Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Library Science, law degree or equivalent advanced degree strongly preferred plus five or more years of research experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Previous experience working in a law firm or other professional services firm, or other legal or government setting preferred
  • Specialized knowledge and experience in practice area which support the [local] practice groups.
  • Strong analytical and research skills with the ability to analyze problems logically and methodically and to absorb and synthesize large amounts of information into practical (actionable) intelligence.
  • Expert knowledge and experience of key litigation and corporate focused databases and tools including Lexis Advance, Bloomberg Law, Lex Machina, Securities Mosaic, Intelligize among others, and a demonstrated ability to share that knowledge with others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with all levels of personnel and to succeed in a teamwork environment. 
  • Ability to follow complex instructions with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint and other tools.
  • Ability to see the big picture
  • Outstanding communication skills, written and oral.

Location & Reporting 

  • This is an exempt role based in the Washington office.
  • This role reports to Associate Director of Research & Information Services.
