Description
The Pence Law Library, with a collection of over 600,000 volumes and volume equivalents and access to hundreds of legal and non-legal databases is seeking a law library faculty tenure-track Associate Law Librarian for Technical and Metadata Services.

 Responsibilities

 This position will manage the Metadata Services Department and provide support and direction for all technical services functions of the Pence Law Library by promoting cutting edge bibliographic access to collections and materials for the faculty and students of the Washington College of Law. This is a Pence Law Library tenure-track position reporting to the Associate Dean for Library and Information Resources.                                                  

In addition to managing the Metadata Services Department and supervising the utilization of metadata schema at the Pence Law Library, this position is responsible for:

  • Cataloging materials in all subjects and formats 
  • Exploring and integrating appropriate emerging technologies into cataloging practices
  • Establishing best practices for facilitating discovery and access to all library resources
  • Taking part in planning, implementing and configuring the ILS system for all library departments 
  • Coordinating the organization, processing and access to materials in all formats    
  • Directly supervising at least two full time employees and several student employees

This position is expected to participate in various collegial law library faculty programs, including collection development and the faculty liaison program and may be expected to participate in the reference desk rotation.

 Required Qualifications

 An MLS from an ALA-accredited institution and at least five years experience in an academic library.  In-depth knowledge of any Integrated Library System, and current trends in metadata standards.    In-depth knowledge of bibliographic utilities and tools including, but not limited to:  OCLC input standards and guidelines, CONNNEXION  software, AACR2, LCSH, LCCS, and MARC21 metadata schema. Understanding of Internet technology as it pertains to relationships between metadata systems. Familiarity with RDA and FRBR sufficient to guide staff in transitioning to these new standards.

 The candidate must possess strong collegial interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse groups, and a demonstrated history of professional development. Supervisory experience is also required.

Also required is the ability to handle complex, analytical work, balance priorities and meet deadlines.  As this is a tenure-track position, the ability to produce scholarly work eligible for publication is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree or certificate in Information Systems or a related field.  Experience with the Innovative Interfaces Millennium system; familiarity with emerging trends in library systems and services. Knowledge of XML or other metadata tools/editors.  Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheets, databases, and word processing applications in a Windows environment.  Also preferred is experience in project management and cross-unit collaboration.
