Federal Librarians Launch New Term

Welcome to a new year of informative Federal Law Librarians programs and community outreach. Both Secretary/Treasurer Tania Andreff of the U.S. Tax Court and myself as President are excited about serving the 2008-09 term and welcome your comments and suggestions!

We launched our new year in June with a business, planning and get-acquainted session. Besides discussing program ideas, all in attendance agreed that updating the Directory of Federal Law Libraries in the D.C. Metropolitan Area should be a top priority. The directory lists approximately 80 area libraries with legal collections regardless of membership in the Society. To date about 60 entries are current.  Is your listing stale? The Directory can be found at http://www.llsdc.org/Dir-FLL with instructions on how to update. Our goal is to reach all remaining libraries!

Mark the following dates for planned upcoming events!

Agency Day scheduled on Wednesday, October 8 from 11 am to 1:30 p.m. Learn about the Department of Homeland Security Library History: Then and Now. Guest speakers will include retired DHS Library Coordinator Kathy Eighmey, retired CBP Library Director Hoyt Galloway, and current DHS librarian Lea Wade among others. See the Calendar of Events at http://www.llsdc.org/en/cev/81 for details.

AALL Portland Recap for Federal Librarians brown-bag meeting on Thursday, October 30 from noon to 1:30 p.m. See the Calendar of Events at http://www.llsdc.org/en/cev/94 for details.

And finally, on behalf of the Federal Librarians membership, I wish to express our gratitude for outgoing President Susan Panasik’s untiring efforts in leading our group and planning high-quality programs last term. Highlights from her tenure include (1) a tour of the Congressional Research Service Knowledge Services Group and the Law Library of Congress; (2) Joint Federal Librarians and U.S. Department of Justice Librarians Virtual Reference brown-bag training and (3) PACER training.
